Plays in Bloom

A New Play Development Program at Bloomsburg University

Plays in Bloom is a new play development program created to provide ongoing opportunities for Bloomsburg University students to collaborate with guest professional theatre artists on the nurturing of new plays. The development of new plays is a vital part of the health of the American theatre and the theatre program at Bloomsburg University is eager to train student theatre artists to be successful new play practitioners.

The activities of Plays in Bloom will include:

Theatre students will contribute to the creation and revision of Positive Practices for New Play Development, a handbook for student and emerging professionals on how to approach and to participate in a new play development process.

Students will participate in a new course, Theatre 492: New Play Development, in which student artists will exercise the positive practices for developing new plays in collaboration with one another and with visiting professional playwrights. The course will be offered in Spring 2022.

In the annual Plays in Bloom Residency student theatre artists will collaborate with a guest professional playwright in a week-long development of a full-length play and participate in a festival of new 10-minute plays written by student playwrights. The inaugural residency will take place May 15 to 25, 2022.

Plays in Bloom is supported by a Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Grant from Bloomsburg University (https://www.bloomu.edu/research_programs) and the Faculty Professional Development Council of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (https://www.passhe.edu/inside/ASA/research/Pages/Faculty-Professional-De...).
