Shepard earned a B.S. in Physics (1984) from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. in Earth and Planetary Science (1994) from Washington University.

His research interests include geology of the terrestrial planets and asteroids, remote sensing of planetary surfaces, and fractal characteristics of geologic surfaces.

Van Rythoven earned a B.S. (Honors) (2005) in Geology, an M.S. (2006) in Petrology, and a Ph.D. (2012) in diamond mineralogy from the University of Toronto.

During and post-graduate school, he worked as a mineralogist in the mining and exploration industry. Projects he has been involved in include rare earths in Wyoming, diamond in Saskatchewan, and silver in Mexico.

His research interests include geometallury of complex mineral deposits, petrology of the mantle, and environmental impacts of resource use.

Her research interests include Antarctic research, distribution of pelagic barnacles of the tropical Pacific Ocean with respect to hydrologic parameters, and sea ice communities in the Antarctic Pack Ice.
