Van Rythoven earned a B.S. (Honors) (2005) in Geology, an M.S. (2006) in Petrology, and a Ph.D. (2012) in diamond mineralogy from the University of Toronto.
During and post-graduate school, he worked as a mineralogist in the mining and exploration industry. Projects he has been involved in include rare earths in Wyoming, diamond in Saskatchewan, and silver in Mexico.
His research interests include geometallury of complex mineral deposits, petrology of the mantle, and environmental impacts of resource use.
