Commencement Details

As we near the day to celebrate your achievements, here are some details for you to help with the planning of your special day.

A reminder that just two guests per graduate will be permitted, and we'll be checking them in using the guest list that was created from your RSVP.

Check-In

Tables and tents will be set up in the parking lot outside of Redman Stadium. The tents will be specific to the first letter of your LAST name. Be sure to get in line at the correct tent since your information will only be at that one tent. At check-in, you will receive your name card, copies of the commencement program, guest wristbands, and academic honor cords, if applicable.

Ensure you and your guests have all their personal items needed for the duration of the event. No one is permitted to leave, then re-enter the stadium.

  • Graduates and guests MUST arrive and check-in TOGETHER. If you are driving separately, please plan to meet prior to check-in.
  • Check-in for the Friday evening ceremony will start at 5 p.m.
  • Check-in for the Saturday & Sunday morning ceremony will start at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for the Saturday and Sunday afternoon ceremony.
  • Please come dressed in your regalia. Master’s and Doctoral students must have their hood already on. Please review the videos on how to wear your regalia.
  • Spike-style heels are NOT permitted to be worn as these present a safety concern. Spike heels may cause you to trip while walking on the field. Wedge-style heels are permitted. Bloomsburg University will not be held liable for any incidents involving spike-style heels.
  • At Redman Stadium, graduates will proceed to the center gate (50-yard line) where you will be directed to a seat. Guests will find an available seat in the home or away bleachers.

Wristbands (tickets)

  • At check-in, your guests will be issued a color-coded wristband specific to your ceremony. The wristband must be worn in order to enter Redman Stadium.
  • Graduates will not be required to wear a wristband but must come dressed in their regalia.

Parking

  • There will be NO busing during commencement. Please note you will be required to walk from the nearby parking lots to Redman Stadium.
  • If you have a handicap placard or license plate, there will be a drop-off area and designated parking near the entrance of Redman Stadium. BUPD will provide directions.

Seating at Redman Stadium

  • The stadium bleachers (home and away) will be used for guests.
  • All seating is on a first-come basis.
  • All bleachers will be marked to follow CDC guidelines for social distancing. There will be markings on the bleachers indicating where to and where not to sit. Your two guests must be seated and remain together in one “pod” to allow for the other guests.
  • All guests must be seated. NO standing will be permitted.
  • Wheelchair areas will be available on the first level of the bleachers. There is a companion seat associated with each space.
  • Ramps are available on either end of the bleachers.
  • There will be a section for guests with mobility restrictions at both ends of the home bleachers. This is filled on a first-come basis.

Honor Cords (undergraduates only)

If your overall GPA was a 3.50 or higher prior to the spring term and you will complete 30 credits at BU by the end of the spring term, you would be eligible for ceremonial distinction. You will be given a gold honor cord during check in on the day of your event.

Photographer

Photographers will be on-site taking photos of you on stage as well as off stage. Proofs will be sent to you directly for optional purchase.

During the event

  • When signaled by a Marshal, you will be asked to proceed to the stage. Bring your name card and present it to the reader on stage. Once your name is read, begin walking across the stage. You will pick up a diploma cover from the table on stage and pose for a picture. Then you will proceed off stage and back to your seat.
  • Masks must be worn as you cross the stage, but students may remove the mask as they exit the stage to have a professional photo taken by Island Photography. Masks must be put back on before leaving the photo area.
  • Leaving the stadium during the event is not permitted. Please remain seated until the conclusion of the event.
  • At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Platform party (on stage) will exit. The graduates will be dismissed row by row to exit the field. You will need to meet your guests behind the bleachers at the conclusion of the event. No one will be allowed on the field after the event concludes.

Other Important Notes

All participants (students, family and supporters) must wear masks (covering the mouth and nose) and maintain social distancing at all times on campus.

  • If you or someone in your group is not feeling well on the day of the event, we ask that they do not attend. While this is a monumental event, we must also remain safe and vigilant.
  • Umbrellas are not permitted inside Redman Stadium. In the event of rain, please be sure to have rain gear. The event will be held rain or shine.
  • No concessions will be available this year due to COVID restrictions. Therefore, we encourage you to bring a plastic bottle of water with you in the event of warm weather.
  • Plan for the ceremony to last about 1.5 hours.
  • There will be photo backdrops set up on lower campus around the quad. Please feel free to visit them to take photos with your family. Landmarks like Carver Hall , the Husky statue, fountain, and Serenity Garden, will be open for you to enjoy.
