A grant is a form of financial aid that does not need to be repaid. Grant eligibility is need-based as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Federal Pell Grant

  • You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for this grant. No separate application is required.
  • You must be an undergraduate student who is pursuing your first bachelor's degree.
  • You must meet general eligibility requirements to receive grant assistance.
  • If eligible, you may only receive a grant for the equivalent of twelve full-time semesters.
  • Award amounts range from $318 to $6,195 for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)

  • You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to apply for this grant. No separate application is required.
  • You must have exceptional financial need to receive as determined by the FAFSA.
  • You must be an undergraduate student who is pursuing your first bachelor's degree.
  • You must meet general eligibility requirements to receive grant assistance.
  • If eligible, you may only receive a grant for the equivalent of twelve full-time semesters.
  • Award amounts range from $200 to $1,000 for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Pennsylvania State Grant

  • To apply for the 2019-2020 academic year, you must complete the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid by May 1, 2019.
  • You may receive other forms to complete via postal service requesting additional information from PHEAA. These documents may include verification of income, household size, dependency status, and other requests. Pennsylvania State Grant funding will be incomplete until the required forms and documents are returned and processed through PHEAA.
  • If eligible, you may only receive a grant for the equivalent of eight full-time semesters.
  • Award amounts vary from year to year based on funding levels. This means your award amount may increase, decrease, or stay the same based on these funding levels but also your financial need.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Domicile - must be a United States citizen and Pennsylvania resident.
  • Undergraduate Enrollment - half or full-time without already receiving a baccalaureate degree or equivalent.
  • Program of Study - must be at least two academic years in length.
  • Maintain Satisfactory Progress - these differ from federal requirements:
    • You must earn twelve credits for each full-time semester of grant received.
    • You must earn six credits for each part-time semester of grant received.
    • Passing grades in developmental courses may be used in two semesters during a student's academic career to help meet the PA State Grant's academic progress requirement if that course was also used to satisfy the PA State Grant's full or part-time enrollment guidelines.
  • Satisfactory Character
  • Loan Default - must not be in default or have a default pending.

Summer Pennsylvania State Grant

  • You must complete a separate Summer Pennylvania State Grant application. You can access this through PHEAA's Account Access or online.
  • The deadline for submitting the summer application is August 15, 2019.
  • You need to be enrolled in at least six credits during the summer semester to apply.
  • The summer grant counts towards the eight full-time semesters of funding.

Other State Grants

Other state grants may be available to out-of-state students from their home states. Students are encouraged to investigate the availability of such financial assistance. Get more information on other State Grant Agencies.
