BU to host seminar on nontraditional romantic relationships

BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania will present the third event of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) Explores Human Potential Symposium titled “Expanding Imaginations of Intimacy: Understanding the Lived Experiences of Nontraditional Romantic Relationships” on Thursday, April 4, at 7 p.m. in Centennial Hall, room 218.

Erin Brummett and Shuzhen Huang, faculty members in the Department of Communication Studies, will explore the lived experiences of nontraditional romantic relationships. This co-presented lecture seeks to affirm the value and legitimacy of relationships that exist on the margins of society. Of equal importance, the presentation will shed light on how these “alternative” intimate relationships challenge views of normality and offer a framework for understanding the potential for meaningful romantic intimacy in queer and interracial relationships.

Brummett’s research program primarily centers on communication surrounding alternative romantic relationships, information and privacy management, and social support processes. She is committed to examining relational contexts as they are situated within social networks and cultural discourses, which are often underrepresented in academic literature and sit outside the realm of normative relational scripts.

Huang trained in multiple disciplines (journalism, gender studies, and communication studies) and lived in multiple cultures. She is committed to interdisciplinary, transnational, and intersectional methods in her research and teaching. Her recent research focus is on the communicative practices of marginalized groups and their global, cultural and material articulations through gender, sexuality, race and class.
