Student Health Center Public Health Information

Dear Bloomsburg University Community:

Student Health Center

Possible cases of mumps have been identified in students at Bloomsburg University. Exposure may have occurred in the time since Oct. 26, 2013. If you are vaccinated against mumps, your risk of getting mumps is very low. But it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of mumps, because you can still get mumps even if you have been vaccinated. Mumps symptoms include swollen glands in front of and below the ear which may last two or more days. Other symptoms may include headache, low-grade fever, and earache. Persons who develop the above symptoms should be evaluated by a health care provider.

Mumps immunity for all persons in a school setting are two properly spaced doses of live attenuated mumps-containing vaccine, the first dose can be administered on or after 12 months of age and the second separated by at least one month from the first; or a written physician diagnosis of mumps disease signed by the physician or the physician’s designee. Each dose of mumps vaccine may be administered as a single antigen vaccine or in a combination form called measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine (MMR). People born in the U.S. before 1957 are presumed to be immune and do not need MMR.

Children and adults who are not immunized or have not completed the mumps vaccine series (MMR) should start or continue getting the vaccine. Please discuss your history of vaccines with your health care provider. A free clinic will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in the Kehr Union Building, as needed, for students who need to complete their MMR vaccination.

If you have any questions or concerns, please review the mumps fact sheet, scrolling down to “M” for mumps information, or contact the Student Health Center at 570-389-2722, your physician, or Pennsylvania Department of Health at 570-988-5513.
